Guide to Zoom


What is Zoom?

Zoom is an online video conferencing tool similar to Skype or Google Hangouts. People can use it to attend online classes, visit virtually with friends and relatives, and even join remote events. The basic version of Zoom account is free. One can sign up for an account or sign on using their existing Google or Facebook account.

How does Zoom work?

You can head to the Download Center to download the Zoom Client on your computer or the mobile app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

To join a Zoom Meeting, click on the link sent over to you via email or click on the Meetings tab in the application to join a scheduled meeting and you’ll automatically be admitted into the meeting.

How is VAY using Zoom?

VAY will be using Zoom to host workshops after the Opening Session.

Do I have to have a Zoom account to use it for the conference?

A Zoom account is not needed for participants (only meeting hosts need an account). However it is preferred. You can create your own account by providing an email and creating a password, or by signing on with Google or Facebook.

What can I do in Zoom?

Within the Zoom meeting you can:

  • Voice chat. Turn on your microphone to talk with each other.

  • Message the group. Send a message in chat to the entire group.

  • Message the host. Send a direct message to the host or facilitator.

  • Raise hand, clap, disagree, etc. There are icons you can click that will let the host know you have a question, comment, or reaction to something.

Zoom Etiquette

The following participation expectations is the norm. Anyone who doesn’t follow these guidelines can be removed from the Zoom meeting, if necessary.

  • Mute your microphone if you aren’t talking.

  • Be on time.

  • Use your real name.

  • Only post in chat messages relevant to the discussion.

  • Dress appropriately.

  • Use a non-distracting background.

What are Zoom Virtual Backgrounds?

Instead of revealing your real background (bedroom, living room, office, etc.), you can change your background to disguise your actual setting. If you choose to use a virtual background, we kindly ask that you use a non-distracting and appropriate background.
